Virender Sehwag, who has been rated as the man to watch out for by his fellow teammate Harbhajan Singh, is hoping to play all 50 overs in the upcoming World Cup matches. He says that so far in his ten year cricket career he has never been able to play all 50 overs and the closest he has gone in doing so is till the 43rd or 44th over.
Speaking on his role in the team the 32-year old said that he has been given full freedom by his captain as well as the coach to play his natural game, whatever might the situation be. He says, “My role is to go out there and enjoy myself and give a good start to the team. If I score 20 runs in 10 balls or 100 in 70, 80 balls I am happy with that.”
Sehwag who was criticized three four years back for his erratic batting style , accepts that he has adjusted his style a bit and gives the new ball some respect now a days. He says that now he prefers to wait for three to four overs before playing his shots in full swing in spite of the fact that the middle order comprises of players like Dhoni, Yuvraj, Pathan, Kohli and Raina.
On being questioned whether his average of about 35 in ODI’s troubled him in any way, in spite of having a test average of 54, Sehwag says “Yes I can do better than what I have done but still I am happy. I am focusing on giving consistent performances in ODI cricket but as long as I contribute to the team, I am happy.”
Viru, as he is called by teammates, is charged about India’s first match against Bangladesh, as the last time India played Bangladesh in the World Cup they lost the match and were ousted of the tournament.
On being asked if his shoulder had rehabilitated or not, Sehwag says that he is on regular medication and hopes to be fit by the 12th for India’s first warm-up match. He also said that once his shoulder is completely fit he would love to bowl in the World Cup and contribute to the team.
Finally he says that the IPL has changed the style of batting of most batsmen in the world and it wouldn’t be very difficult for any team to chase down 10 runs an over as well.
