Sao Paulo, Feb 15: World’s most successful soccer player and Brazilian striker announced his retirement on Monday. The 34 year old experienced player, three times FIFA World Player of the year, the record goal scorer in World Cup tournaments said that injuries and lack of fitness prevented him from playing his best soccer on the field. “I’m here to announce that I’m ending my career as a professional player,” Ronaldo, who came with his two sons sitting beside him, told a packed news conference at Corinthians’ training complex in Sao Paulo. Ronaldo, who has a contract with Corinthians’ till the end of the year said that the on the spot decision of retirement was taken due to bad injuries happening since many years.
“Four years back at AC Milan, I came to know about that I was suffering from a complaint called hypothyroidism, which slows down your metabolism and to control it, I would have to take some hormones that is not allowed to take in soccer due to anti-doping. I wanted to enclose this at the last day of my career,” said Ronaldo who has always struggled with his weight, which never went down and often suffered the jibe of ‘fatty ‘during his career. Ronaldo broke down in tears, when he apologised to the Corinthians fans for failing to win the major prize of the Libertadores Cup and said he would still go to their matches as a supporter.
Corinthian was knocked out of South America’s elite club competition, which they have never won in the preliminary round two weeks ago. They went to round 16 in 2010, which was their centenary year. “I can’t take it anymore from here. The body is paining a lot. The head wants to go on but body is not supporting it,” Ronaldo said.
