Fernando Torres disappointed in his first appearance in a blue shirt as Chelsea were beaten 1-0 at Stamford Bridge by his former club Liverpool. The Spaniard, starting alongside Drogba in attack, was replaced after an ineffective 65 minutes on the field to cap off a debut to forget.
It could have been a different story though if his shot in the first minute had gone into the top corner. Alas! It was a bit too high. Liverpool had a nervy first half and the possession was dominated by Chelsea. But when they attacked, they almost took the lead. Gerrard, from the right wing crossed to a waiting Maxi Rodriguez, who mishit from close range and the ball rebounded off the crossbar.
The story of the first half continued in the second half with Chelsea keeping the ball but Liverpool coming close to scoring. But Glenn Johnson’s shot from 20 yards didn’t threaten Cech. With 65 minutes gone, Ancelotti brought on Kalou for Torres but it was Liverpool who took the lead soon after Gerrard whipped in another cross from the right as Ivanovic and Cech stood rooted to their spot. The ball found Meireles at the far post who shot home with ease.
Chelsea attacked and attacked for the rest of the match but the goal wouldn’t come. Drogba came closest forcing Reina to make a smart save. Even the introduction of new signing David Luiz didn’t help matters as Chelsea slumped to their seventh loss of the season. Liverpool have now picked up 13 points from the last 5 matches to spring up to 6th in the table, just two spots behind Chelsea, keeping alive their hopes of competing in Europe’s premier competition next year.
