Winding up at the thirteenth round, the Tata Steel chess championship title went into the hands of USA’s Hikaru Nakamura, beating India’s Viswanathan Anand at Wijk aan Zee on Sunday.
The World’s No. 10, Nakamura, felt that it was an important win in his career. He drew with China’s Wang Hao to stay ahead of Anand who signed peace with Ian Nepomniachtchi. After Nakamura attained a strong hold after 22 moves, focus was on Anand’s moves for him to atleast make a draw with the former. The runner up finish was Vishy’s sixth time in his entire 73 games of play.
In group ‘B’, Surya Shekar Ganguly finished 11th with 5.5 points after a draw wuth Vietnam’s Le Quang Liem. England’s Luke McShane and Czech Republic’s David Navara tied for title at 8.5 points.
Least rated Tania Sachdev played beyond expectations in Group ‘C’ to finish sixth. Tania’s sixth round opponent Italy’s Daniele Vocaturo won the title with 8.5 points.
