Gary Kirsten’s contract is unlikely to be extended as the South African opener who coached Team India for three years since 2008 is set to terminate his role as coach after the World Cup in the subcontinent. His decision is driven by his desire to look after his family, especially his sons Joshua and James. The hectic schedule Team India had for the past three years hardly allowed him to spare time for his family and kids.
Needless to say Gary’s contribution to the team has been immense, right from establishing an intimate rapport between the players to infusing into this young team the ‘habit of winning’. The players have already sung in praise of Kirsten’s role as coach in the team. The unassuming person he is, he has always been a man behind the screens and has allowed the players to take the centre stage.
Dhoni and the management said they have done everything they could, ethically, to extend his contract with the team but must respect his decision for it is the family which is more important than money.
