This year, world tennis has begun its account with the Australian Open, one of the most celebrated Grand Slams, at Melbourne. While men’s singles is getting tougher with Federer and Nadal, it has become quite easier for Clijsters to clinch the title due to the withdrawal of the five-time champion Serena Williams.
Roger Federer:
Federer wishes to begin his account of this year, with a grand slam and is hence very particular in winning the title. “For me it’s the one during the year. Then the other one, if Rafa were to do it, it’s amazing in itself as well. It’s just a different order. But it shouldn’t take much away from it. It’s very close but it’s not on the calendar grand slam.. Obviously, the classic one is the one that Rod Laver did twice. That will always be that way.” he said.
Rafael Nadal:
The quest for Rafa towards the grand slam is really serious. World No. 1 Nadal is looking forward to become the first person in the 42 years to win all the four Grand Slam titles simultaneously. The Spaniard has already bagged three major titles, the French Open, Wimbledon and US Open last year and is particular about creating a history in tennis.
“I think if that’s to happen, for sure I’ll be happier that I won the Australian Open than because it’s the fourth one in a row. Maybe I’m only going to have this opportunity once in my career. But not for that reason Iam going to have the pressure.” said the top seeder.
Will Rafael Nadal take possession of the title?
Clijsters favoured:
In the women’s arena, things are turning in favour of Belgium’s Kim Clijsters as the five time champion Serena Williams’s withdrawal due to injury. Thus this season will show a tough competition among Clijsters, Justine Henin and Caroline Wozniacki.
