Abu Dhabi, Jan 23: Germany’s Martin Kaymer was the cause for Tiger Woods to make him slip down to world no. 3, when he stormed to eight-shot victory in the Abu Dhabi Championship on Sunday. In this way Martin takes the second spot. Kaymer, 26 was good enough to make Tiger Woods to slip down to third position as he successfully defended his Abu Dhabi title and claimed the event for a third time in four years.
“To be in front of him is a great honour for me even if it is for a little time, but let’s see how much time it takes for him to overtake me again, but you know it that it makes me very proud to be in top 2 and I’m feeling that I’m the best player in the world right now,” Kaymer told reporters. The victory was Kaymer’s ninth one in the European Tour and the European no one has now bagged four titles of his last eight events, since the 2010 US PGA Championship, earning 2.4 million euros in prize money. The German began the final round at 18-under par, five strokes clear of nearest rival Rory Mcllroy and carded a closing round 66 for a 24 under-par victory tally.
“The very crucial thing for me today was that I was having lots of fun, and if I have fun then certainly I play a very good golf. I played with Rory today and we definitely enjoyed the time at golf course,” Said Kaymer. Northern Irishman Mcllroy went one better than last year’s third place finish.
