The troubled striker who has already played for 4 clubs in his 8 year old career is set to change his club yet again.
The former Ipswich, Charlton and Tottenham striker has reportedly handed in a transfer request to the club and the Sunderland chairman, Niall Quinn has accepted an £18m bid from Aston Villa. The fee could further rise up to £24m, depending on Bent’s performance with the new club. Aston Villa are desperately in need of a new striker with Emile Heskey getting older and Agbonlahor still not performing up to mark. Darren Bent could fit in the bill perfectly with all the experience he has got of playing in the Premier League. Though, the Black Cats’ fans might get offended should the deal go ahead because Bent has become a fan favorite since his arrival and was the central player in Sunderland’s bid to end in top 7. The English international has scored 36 times in 62 appearances for Sunderland in 2009. He has also made 7 international appearances, netting the ball once.
The Villa fans are delighted with this news since they had been asking their owners to spend on the club for quite some time. For Gerrard Houllier, the new arrival could come in as a relief since the under-fire manager will get some experience in his squad full of talented youngsters like Downing, Albrighton and Bannan. Houllier has already splashed cash on Jean Makoun along with bringing Kyle Walker on loan at the Villa Park and there are speculations that he might approach Manchester United with a loan deal for Michael Owen.
