New Delhi, Jan 05: It has been only two months since the end of Commonwealth Games and the venues prepared for that, have already started to get damage. The brand new synthetic track, which was laid at the Jawaharlal Nehru Stadium, has been completely destroyed and is currently unfit to host any of the events there, unless it gets majorly repaired on that nine lane surface. Though, officials are not ready to admit that, the damage is huge one but there is certain reality, as there are many cracks appeared on the track, particularly on the home straight, which about 30 metres from the finishing point is.
Even the track is uneven at many places but fortunately there has been patchwork done for it. The main venue for the Commonwealth Games have still not opened yet, which have put many athletes frustrated as they are unable to do training. It is really unlikely that it will open for athletes to train in coming time. The Jawaharlal Nehru Stadium complex was built at a whooping cost of Rs 960 crore. From that amount the synthetic track is built at estimated price of Rs 3.7 crore. Officials have stuck their lips, as they are not saying anything about the damage of the track, which took place due to faulty foundation.
So what is the reason behind damage? A Sports Authority of India (SAI) official blames faulty work on track. “The base work was done quickly and in a very hurry and the rechecking was also not done.” How much the damage is occurred is still yet to be assessed. The Central Public Work Department that took the charge of building the stadium and SAI are drawing up comprehensive lists of all the items partly or fully damaged during the closing ceremony and the costs involved.
