Last Tuesday, the second day of the Chennai Open pressed the ‘terminate’ button to the dreams of Indian tennis fans. There were only three entrants into the Chennai Open from India and now it is zeroed down.
The 2009 finalist, World No. 94 Somdev Devvarman hit the highest point in his career this October but lost to Belgian player David Goffin.
David’s first ATP Tour took him straight sets to take over Somdev. There was no question of a third set, however hard our player tried it was not gripping enough to hold the Belgian chap. Goffin won with a big range of 6-2, 6-4. There would have been a close competition however Somdev claimed that it was his fault as he did not play well, he turned nervous apparently.
Heavy hopes were laid on Somdev as other two Indian players were wild card entrants.
Devvarman still had a positive comeback in the second set, but the dragging of the set fabricated a strategy to Goffin where he indulged in long rallies.
The other Indian singles players were also knocked out of the tournament.
The third seeded Stanislas played an inspiring game with Rohan Bopanna in the first round. He defeated Rohan by 6-4, 6-4 in the Ist round.
The straight is becoming more common with Indian players. Stanislas hit the ball right into the crowds where many rose to catch it.
Yuki was a cub in the pride of lions; the junior champion was not completely ready for the singles. He stated recently that if he could go back in time, he would! As all of us think..
Yuki lost to the Russian player Alexandre 6-2, 6-1. The game ended in a short while, the frenzy fans returned home disappointed.
Games played, games lost and that how it was….
The host team cannot afford to lose at the very start at least for the reputation considerations; it was a dismal to watch our players return down faced.
Though one side of the coin is bleak, the other side is soothing as India is into tennis, playing and promoting.
Expecting more victories in the doubles….
