Most of the Indian champions and the challengers at the national and international sports meet who made the country proud are of rural background. Every meet has a twined controversy coming along Asian Games is no exception to it. The UP ace athlete who made India proud with her gold at 3000m steeplechase was in the news last week. The typical self-esteem issue gained more heat when Sudha Singh left mid way at the cross-country race where she was invited as a guest.
What is the issue?
The issue is the ignorance of the politicians. What that is astounding is; not knowing about the fellow guests at an event. The UP Sports Minister was there too to flag-off the race. Poor minister can be forgiven for not having known that Singh was there too but what can be done when he barely knew who Singh was. On top of it our minister was late to the event as any other politician is.
Expectation from Singh was very natural as she is an international achiever but what cannot be accepted is the world recognized her skills even before the country did, precisely the state did. Her state men did not recognize her, agonized Singh decided to leave the place at once where her self-respect was hurt.
Essentially problem comes when you are recognized too much and hitting the celluloid everyday here issue rose for not being recognized.
Sudha was ready to take offers from other states where her talent was given due respect and decided not to run for UP any longer.
Apologies fled from the UP governmental authorities for unnoticing her at the event and there were statements that contradicted. Minister had said “I did not know that Singh was also present at the cross-country race” but there were posts in various cables that the Minister said ‘Who is Sudha Singh?’
Though there were clashing reports finally there was a decision out from Singh as she was no way towards any arguments in this regard. Along with the apologies came the assurance of due treatment to the world-class athletes in future by the Government.
She stated recently that she will continue representing UP as she was. It is her love for her home state which made the tie intact and not the apology that soothed her.
