Every birthday is special, if the birthday falls on a special day it becomes more memorable. Though it is like any other day in the calendar, the person would feel like a king or a queen then.
For the eminent sports persons who were born on 01/01/xxxx, I dedicate this post.
So here ‘Happy Birthday Folks!’
It is just a jotting of few sportsmen; there are couple of others too.
Andy Andrews (Tennis)
On the New Year of 1959 was born Andy at North America. Previous generation might know more about his achievements. This professional tennis player played amusingly well in pairs. When it came to singles there was no great show though. With three titles in his basket he was in World No. – 37 in the doubles.
Andy always was a mediocre player irrespective of the surface. Be it clay or grass or carpet or hard, the show was promised from his side.
Andy is still remembered for his doubles.
Lilian Thuram (Football)
I am bad at remembering non-Indian names, if someone says France Soccer Team all I can think of is Zidane.
On reading more, Lilian’ profile seems more deep and inspiring.
He gets the credit of most capped player of the French Team and the best defender.
Thuram won the 1998 World Cup, though it was the team he became a hero with scoring two goals and Euro 2000.
So many awards, titles, caps were not enough for this man, he also played in his cousin’ album ‘Fos A Peyi La’.
His life in the Football Clubs was so intensive to be listed out here; he was not consistent in staying one, switching four clubs in his career and final in 2006 with Barcelona.
David Nalbandian (Tennis)
He is in fact my favorite because of one simple reason; David celebrated his birthday cutting a cake in shape of a tennis court in 2008 at the Chennai Open. (The cake looked awesome!)
Argentine tennis player was former World No. – 3 and now 29th. His peak in the career was when he won the Tennis Masters Cup in 2005 and Wimbledon Runner Up in 2002.
His sudden dip in his career is due to various abdominal injuries and leg injuries.
2007 was the year of crest for him; he was all time in bliss as he defeated top three seeds Federer, Nadal and Djokovic.
He is all-court player (though he has shown best results on clay) and a clean ball striker and he is Nadal’s best friend!
Alok Kapali (Cricket)
Alok belongs to Bangladesh and an all-rounder. He is often called as the ‘Shane Warne’ of Bangladesh. He is remembered for his Test hat-trick. His ODI carrer was also remarkable with 115 runs.
Everything was a cake-walk for Alok until he was banned for 10 years for playing International Games. This was because he illegally joined ICL and played for Dhaka Warriors in 2008.
Due to several controversies, his show was short lived for the span of six years.
For the above mentioned players and many other celebrities for who 01/01 is special a very Happy Birthday Wishes!
