Milan was in bit of a mixed emotional state this Sunday as ironic fates took over the Milan clubs, Inter Milan and AC Milan. AC Milan the Italian Serie A toppers suffered a shock defeat to AS Roma at the San Siro while Inter relished their third World Championship by beating Congo club TP Mazembe in the Finals. Ironically, Inter Milan is the club struggling for form and is placed 7th in the Italian standings.
Roma’s Marco Borriello found a lucky deflection in the second half to score the winner goal against his former club. The counter attack goal in the 68th minute was triggered by a fast break on the right wing by the pacey Frenchman Jeremy Menez whose low cross was cleared by Ignazio Abate, but the ball bounced against Borriello’s leg and went past Christian Abbiati.
Milan had to replace experienced mid-fielder Andrea Pirlo in the 22nd minute due to muscular injury which is common in freezing temperatures during winter in Europe.
Dutch veteran Clarence Seedorf replaced Pirlo who tried to equalize but his superb pass was dealt very badly by team mate Robinho whose shot was like a clearance.
Inter Milan on the other hand dominated the African debutants who were the first club apart from European and South American origin to enter the World Club Championship Finals. Inter’s coach Rafael Benitez was under heavy criticism due to the lack of form in the Serie A and was expected to win the championship against much weaker opponents. The win might give him some more games to prove that he is worth being Inter Milan’s manager.
Goran Pandev and Samuel Eto’o scored in the first half while Biabiany added the third in stoppage time.
Inter are currently 7th in the league and need to buck up as AC Milan’s shock defeat took as Roma to third spot only 7 points behind leaders AC Milan.
