Is Evans The Real Cause For Manchester United Defensive Errors?

Jonny Evans

Jonny Evans

Jonny Evans the United’s future star according to Sir Alex Ferguson is turning out to be the flop of the season so far. The young Irishman who was all under the lamplight for its impressive defending last season couldn’t be maintained and came under the lamplight again for every possible wrong reason. His current form has not only affected his reputation but has even cost Manchester United with some draws early this season.

This is the real test for him.  The problem with him this season is that he is not able to hold on in front of physically strong Strikers, he had immense troubles in front Zamora of Fulham, Torres from Liverpool and Kevin Davies of Bolton outsmarted him throughout the match. The recent name adding up to the list is Carton Cole of West Ham. The young defender had constant problems in marking strong players and was even poor in terms of interception and headers. The last match against Blackburn in EPL was a 7-1 win over them but still the single goal conceded in that match was because of Jonny Evans who failed to mark the goal scorer Samba from heading the ball past Van Der Sar.

He himself admitted that he was never taken out of the lineup because of his performance but this is the first time he is going through this. He admitted that this is real test for him. To add to all this problems his performance against West Ham has ended up in mounting much pressure on him.

It is true that he was not the only player who made fatal errors and was responsible for some poor defensive runs by United. But the truth is even after getting so much of first team performance this season in absence of Rio Ferdinand he couldn’t impress and rather was sloppy in the defense. His age can’t be taken him to consideration as the errors which all the youngsters including him was not acceptable when playing at such high standards.

Ferguson before the match against West Ham revealed Smalling and Evans as the future of the club. The player who has set such expectation must start playing up to his potential.

The question is whether all the above mentioned reasons enough to prove that the player who started his carrier with such great potential is a liability for the ream at this moment. The youngster who is just 24 years old till now has a lot more to come from his carrier. The best thing he can do is to hold his nerve strong and then deliver some fine performance and prove all his critics wrong.
