The most dazzling and entertaining T20 tournament of the world has been surrounded by quite many controversies. Lalit Modi himself got sacked. Then, Rajasthan Royals and King’s XI Punjab were slammed from the tournament. The first three seasons promised ravishing showbiz. With the previous teams dissolved now a reshuffle of players was to happen for the season 4. And, with the reshuffling of players in season 4 it is expected to be grander. But, with BCCI amidst so many legal disputes the auctions are tentatively postponed. They would probably now be held amid the World Cup in March.
The Auction was initially bound to happen in November and then they were already postponed to January 8 and 9. Now, the status of the two franchises (Punjab and Rajasthan) being uncertain would mean another delay. “I don’t think the auction will happen before March,” a top IPL official said to a leading news channel. He also said ”This is going to be a long drawn-out battle – if the court favors the BCCI, then the other side will go to the Supreme Court and vice-versa. The whole thing is sub-judice. Whatever happens in the High Court, one party will go to the Supreme Court.”
Even the Kochi franchise had got stuck in the middle with an ownership issue. There were issues with the sweat equity (ownership share given for hard work or contacts, as opposed to money put in). But, now the issue has been solved and BCCI has shown a green flag to Kochi for IPL 4. Whilst, one IPL official said any High Court order concerning Punjab and Rajasthan was unlikely to take place before December 15 at the earliest. “And if the party goes to Supreme Court, it will have to wait as the court will be closed for winter vacation.” The court will re-open in the first week of January and he said, “Only if the case is dismissed prima facie, then the matter ends. Otherwise it is most likely to extend to February at least.”
The auction delay would definitely have an impact on the ongoing World Cup at that time. The World Cup is set to begin from Feb 18 in the subcontinent. It will be interesting to see how things sort out? If at all 10 teams play in the IPL then the number of matches will have to increase from 56. But, who cares! We just want full2s entertainment. Let’s leave it to the IPL committee to decide!
