VJD Method

Well, IITians are the most creative and innovative minds in the country and the world for the matter. Every now and then we see an Engineer from IIT coming up with some new interesting substance. First it was the Rupee Symbol. Now, it’s the new VJD method which has got a nod from BCCI for use in IPL season 4 instead of the D/L method in an interrupted second innings match.

The system is developed by Kerela engineer V. Jayadevan. Jayadevan, 46, is a Civil engineer and holds a Master’s degree in building technology from Indian Institute of Technology, Madras. He is currently the deputy director of the publications division in the Kerela Research Institute. He made a presentation of his system called the ‘VJD’ to the Board of Control for Cricket (BCCI) technical committee in Chennai on Friday. The system can be used for computing target scores in interrupted one-day and Twenty20 (T20) matches.

“I spent half an hour with the committee headed by former Indian captain Sunil Gavaskar and answered queries. I was then told that my system would be put into practice in the next edition of IPL”, said Jayedevan. He also told that BCCI has used his model in about 30 model domestic matches before. Jayedevan accidentally developed this VJD method as an alternative to the Duckworth-Lewis (D/L) mathematical formula.

“The D/L formula uses a concept of resources available and resources used, while my model employs the concept of normal and target scores. The method is capable of satisfactorily handling any number of interruptions during any stage of the game”, added Jayedevan. He has been working on the method for past one decade. Recently he was also financially aided by BCCI. Jayedevan also said “Over the years, I have made certain modifications in my model and the one that is going to be used in the next IPL is the model I fine-tuned in 2007”.

The BCCI has given a nod to using this new ‘VJD’ method in the next IPL season 4 and also presenting this model to the ICC. The D/L method has been found to be unfair many a times previously in rain-interrupted matches. It caused oust of SA from the World Cup 2003 which was really unlucky for them. That was the first match they lost and that too was on the basis on D/L which looked a really bad way of judgment. It will be really interesting to see how VJD works out and how it makes the game fair. Let’s wait and watch!
