New Delhi, Dec 04: It was really disappointing when the defending champion C. Muniyappa and double time PGA Tour winner Daniel Chopra, who were kicked out of the Hero Honda Indian Open, while on the other hand Manav Jaini used the home turf with a very good effect, and ensured himself to be the contender for the title at the Delhi Golf Club on Friday. Arjun Atwal, the other winner of PGA Tour in the Open, made very good use of the lost ground, with much improved three under 69 to lay four shots off lead at the middle stage. Atwal who was ranked 45th overnight, is now placed at 18th position, with five others which includes Ashok Kumar and Firoz Ali.
“I was very sharp and effective today and very less rusty,” said the excited Atwal at the end of the day, which was well honoured and respected by the Indian Golf Union (IGU) for his brilliant performance in PGA Tour. “This is just the first step and very early journey, Indian Golf has a very huge promise and there would be many players coming up to take up the centre stage” said Atwal who told the crowd who were gathered around in the function. By getting the lead in the second round, Atwal though will be with Korean young man Baek Seuk-hyun and England’s Simon Griffith (138) who was positioned in the same line to win their debut Asian title tour.
Manav was accompanied in third place by two Americans Anthony Kong (67) and Ben Fox (69). With them is Sweden’s Richard Karlberg (69), who is doing a pretty good job and is at a chase for the second win at the Delhi venue after the SAIL open this earlier year. “This is my home ground, so I know it pretty well enough. I think any score under 10 would a victory score. A very positive attitude at this place helps a lot.” said Jaini.
