One would think after watching countless Rafael Nadal and Roger Federer matches we would be bored, but no these athletes don’t look at each other, they only have their eyes on the prize. Watching a match between Federer and Nadal is much like watching a match between Serena and Venus Williams which to us may seem jaded at times but for them is of large significance. It may be Wimbledon or the Australian Open, when these two men are on the tennis court you can be rest assured that match is going to be no less than a fire cracker.
Nadal representing the near future of tennis and Federer the soon to be past of tennis (either way giving an interesting present) have faced each other on all the surfaces.
Roger Federer has become a household name even in a country like India which is so heavily dominated by cricket. Federer aka “the swiss maestro” and “The Federer Express” has 16 Grand Slam titles to his name which no other Tennis star in any surface has. Rafael Nadal is also not far behind, with his future ahead of him and already having 9 Grand Slam titles in the bag. It is fair to assume then that he will be an unstoppable force unless another upcoming player like Andy Murray improves and comes to rain on his parade.
So is it right to believe that we are a part of one of the greatest era’s in tennis? The Australians believe the greatest era was during the 60’s, the French believe it to be in the 20’s and 30’s and the America’s believe it to be during the times of Pete Sampras and Andre Agassi.
But what no one can deny is the friendship the two Tennis sensations share. Even though they have played each other on numerous occasions the zest in both cannot be questioned. They have proved to be great role models as well as ambassadors for their nations. They have also shown the sporting world that as much rivalry you may have as sportsmen/women does not have to affect your relationship with the player off court or even on court. Cricket is no longer a “gentleman’s game” that title belongs to the game of Tennis.
Irrespective of the number or the Grand Slams, they both have cried buckets on losing to each other. If this isn’t love for a sport then I don’t know what is.
