The dream team are back together again, but don’t get too excited, just like any Bollywood couple, it isn’t long term.
After major differences between Mahesh Bhupathi and Leander Paes they’ve finally decided to bury the hatchet and team up for the upcoming Australian Open in January 2011. One of the possible reasons for this friendly reunion is that the Australian Open is the only Grand Slam the two haven’t won yet but came very close to winning in the past; which also turned out to be the last Grand Slam the two Indian Tennis champions played together before they split.
Though both have individually ranked well, in 5th and 6th seed, had they not let their personal drama get in the way of their passion they could have been ranked even higher. But drama would have constantly come in the way of Paes and Bhupathi’s relationship because both of them have always been enamoured by the Indian film industry or to make it more obvious, the Indian film industry female actors. The cherry on top is, now both seem to be interested in acting as well.
Both Paes and Bhupathi have made it apparent that had they had a choice they would have chosen other partners for the men’s doubles championships. Paes having partnered with Lukas Dlouhy of Czech Republic and Bhupathi with Max Mirnyi of Belarus, who is now also looking for another partner.
There is also a possibility that if this relationship is an open one, meaning both can switch partners at any occasion in the next year, so anybody expecting this to be love united is in for a heart break indeed.
So it is safe to assume that neither was each others first choice and will continue not to be as long as it’s convenient for them.
Either way whether the succeed or not, everyone will know asking Paes and Bhupathi to get along is like asking Shane Warne to stay loyal to his wife, it just isn’t going to happen.
It seems more likely that Rohan Bopanna and Ehsam Qureshi will have a brighter more promising future and even if they don’t, let’s hope we seen more maturity and no futile bickering from them.
