David Beckham will receive the BBC Sports Personality Lifetime Achievement award this Sunday. The 35-year-old is England’s most capped midfielder and has won 6 English Premier League titles and the Champions League crown with his former club Manchester United.
He won the La Liga with Real Madrid after a £25 million move from Man United before joining LA Galaxy and also spent 2 loan periods at AC Milan in the Italian Serie A. In 2001, David was named the BBC Sports Personality of the Year. The lifetime honour is one of the many awards which will be presented during the BBC Sports Personality of the Year show on Sunday.
“David’s record on and off the pitch has been remarkable, “BBC Sports Personality of the Year editor Carl Doran quoted. “It’s a fitting reward for his outstanding career as a player and for his tireless work as an ambassador of British sport. He also said that David has been a great role model for many and he’s sure to get an amazing reaction from the Birmingham people.
9 years ago Beckham won the main award, which was the people’s choice award after an outstanding display for England against Greece in which his delayed free-kick earned England a spot in the 2002 World Cup finals. His national team career began in Sept 1996 against Moldova his 115th cap coming against Belarus in October 2009. He was the England skipper 59 times during that period.
Having made appearances and scoring in the previous 3 World Cups, Beckham was expected to be selected for the World cup in South Africa earlier this year in June. But he suffered from a torn Achilles tendon owing to which was ruled out of what would have been his fourth consecutive World Cup.
His celebrated England career owes a lot to the 10 years he spent at the Theatre of Dreams – Old Trafford under the guidance of Man United manager Sir Alex Ferguson, who was the one to win the first BBC lifetime award in 2001.
Beckham was also a part of United’s FA Youth Cup winning side of 1992.He went on to lift 9 major trophies with the club. One of his most memorable years was in 1999 when Man United clinched both the League and Champions league trophy. His corners led to the two late strikes one just before full time and one in the stoppage time which helped Manchester United to fight back from a goal down to beat Bayern Munich 2-1 in a dramatic Champions League final at Nou Camp.
