Here we are! Entering into the fourteenth year of the most acclaimed and also said to be well organized tournament Chennai Open 2011, India’s biggest Tournament. CO is now into the ATP World Tour 250 Tournament and is held during the first week of January. Chennai-ites are buzzing ceaselessly to welcome this New Year with CO as they always did. This tournament has acquired the tag ‘best organized’ from many of the top seeded players like Carlos Moya, Rafael Nadal, and Marin Cilic.
It was in 2008 CO Nadal had said this tournament is the one which cheers him up and he completely loves the enthusiasm and the loud spectators here as Nadal himself loves the game when it gets wild. He ended with the runners’ title in Men’s Singles in the same year.
Cilic has a special place for CO in his heart; the Champion rocked the game in the last two tournaments. ‘I am looking forward to get it again’ said Cilic. Other elite players at the CO include Dustin Brown, Tomas Berdych, Rui Machado and many others. Proudly I like to write, Somdev Devvarman is representing the host nation. He got in through direct merit basis. Though Yuki Bambri and Rohan Bopanna were the two entrants through wild card it is accepted that there is a great potential in them. Yuki, World No 1 in junior ranking seems to be highly promising.
CO-2011 will be held from January 3-9 at SDAT Tennis Stadium, Chennai with the title sponsor Aircel and other sponsors namely Govt. of Tamil Nadu, Indian Bank and Indian Overseas Bank, Murugappa Group, Larsen and Toubro, Kingfisher, Wilson and others.
It is anticipated that many fans for the sport will be arriving at Chennai this January from other parts of the world; they certainly should have more in their bucket list other than tennis. The tourist spots in Chennai and its vicinity are ready to be explored by them.
