Chelsea’s bad run in the English Premier League continued as the champions were held to a 1-1 draw by hosts and rival Londoners Tottenham Hotspurs. Chelsea looked shaky and unorganized right from the kick-off. On the other hand Tottenham looked sharp and attacked with their trademark wide positions. The London derby was a very cricial one as a win could secure top spot or could cut down the difference between them and current League leaders Arsenal. Though neither of the two teams won, Tottenham will be happy by the fact that they grounded the champions.
Tottenham attacked from wide positions and troubled Petr Cech’s goal constantly. It took ace striker Roman Pavluechenko only 15 minutes to strike the ball behind the goal keeper with an intellegent first touch and a clinical left foot finish. Chelsea who scored at 4 goals per game in the starting 8 games of the season could hardly test the Spurs goal keeper Haurelho Gomes in the first half.
The second half was as dissapointing as the first for Chelsea as they couldnt match the stibg in front of the goal that they are known for. But, Gomes made a terrible blunder in the 70th minute when he handled the bottom part of the ball off Didier Drogbas volley and squandered it into the goal. The White Hart Lane stadium was shocked in silence after that school boy mistake. Spurs moved on and atteacked with full energy but with no avail.
As soon as the match went into the stoppage time and a draw was on the cards, Haurelho Gomes made another mistake. He brought down Ramires in the penalty area and a spot kick was awarded to the champions. Drogba stepped up and blasted a right footer on target, but, Gomes dived and saved the goal paying back to the blunders he made.
The match ended in a draw and disappointment was evident on every Chelsea players face as they had gained only 6 points from their last 7 matches and are placed 4th in the league. Tottenham remained 5th in the league and will try to overtake Chelsea in course of their bad form.
