From the beginning of the season Manchester United was seen as a big club struggling in more ways than one. Their failure to form an organized defense was a big trouble, their inability to give away leads added to the pickle and the effective element for their struggle was their form in front of goal. But, on Saturday evening things took a banana turn at old Trafford as the Red Devils thrashed Blackburn Rovers 7-1!
Dimitar Berbatov who was criticized last season for poor goal scoring form answered all questions with a five goal spectacular performance which not only gave his side a morale boosting victory but also put them on top of the Barclays premier league, three points clear of Chelsea- their major rivals.
The goal rout started in the second minute when Berbatov scored from close range. Ji Sung Park doubled the lead four minutes before Berbatov netted his second in the 27th minute. The Bulgarian then netted three goals in the second half at 47th, 62th and 70th minute; all these goals were scored from close range and full credit went to Berbatov who positioned himself superbly in the penalty box and took advantage of Blackburn’s defensive lapses. Nani scored fifth goal in the 48th minute with an exquisite finish. Chris Samba scored a consolation goal for the Rovers in the 83rd minute which his team didn’t even celebrate; they were down and out by then.
Manchester United’s midfield dominated the match with a perfect mixture of intelligent, creative and attacking football. It was the strong United midfield that gave Berbatov so many chances to score. Wayne Rooney returned and didn’t score but was instrumental in creating chances and causing threats to the Blackburn resistance .Berbatov could have scored the sixth but his aerial attempt was kept out by the Rovers goal-keeper.
As Chelsea kept slipping down the league table, Manchester United has gained a lot of confidence from the victory. They had a very tough time with five consecutive draws and Wayne Rooney’s absence but now it seems like Sir Alex Ferguson has steadied the ship and is ready to race it to become the Barclays premier league champions by the end of the season; they currently have the right momentum in this stage of the competition.
