Guangzhou, Nov 19: For the past 17 years Sunny Thomas has given the service of coach to Indian shooters, and now on Friday he declared that, he will no more continue the job of coach after the Asian Games, as seeing the very rough performance from the players in the ongoing tournament. Indian shooters has won only three silvers and two bronze medals in this Asian Games which is a very poor performance compared to the last Commonwealth Games, where they were on the roll with winning 30 medals in total. “I had the meeting with my shooters yesterday, and I told them that I won’t more be a coach of you all.” said Thomas.
“I have already announced the statement of retirement from coach after the Games, to the general secretary of NRAI Baljit Singh Sethi. I have been in this arena as the chief national coach, for a very huge time that is for almost 17 years now, so I guess I’m no more that much productive for the team ahead in the future.” Thomas added. Thomas said that he will depart to Delhi on Nov 25, after the end of Shot Gun event which commenced yesterday, and will have a meeting with technical committee on Nov 27, before he departs to Kerala on Nov 28.
“I will be staying in touch with shooting though, as I’m the vice president of the Federation. But now I feel that to continue the responsibility of chief national coach, which I took in 1993, is a huge overload for me. I want to be free now from national coach and observe the things only from inside.” said the 69 year old veteran. The shooting team created a great history after achieving the tally of 30 medals, out of which 14 were gold, which raised a big expectation from them to do similar job in Asian Games, which failed miserably.
