India had been doing quite well at the Asian Games. Let us go through the various achievements of India so far at the Asian Games. Let’s start off with the latest feat: Bajrang Lal Takhar winning India’s maiden rowing gold medal. He triumphed in the men’s single scull event here Friday. India’s eight men row team also grabbed silver and the women claimed the pair bronze as well at the International Rowing Center today.
Bajrang, 29, is an army man and is born in Rajasthan. He was already a favorite due to Gold at the Asian championship last year in Korea. He has given India the second gold after Pankaj Advani, who clinched the yellow in billiards on the second day of the games. Takhar rowed his way from the start to finish in 7 minutes and 4.78 seconds in the 2000m race. The second to finish the race was Chinsese Taipei’s Wang Hui(7:07.33) and he was followed by the Iraq’s haider Hamarasheid(7:10.10).
Later on the seventh day, the women’s twosome of Pratima Puhana and Pramila Minz won the pair bronze finishing the race in 7 minutes and 47.5 seconds. They were lagging well behind the China team of Zhengping Sun and Hong Ling who finished with the gold in a mere 7:22.06.
India’s eight men team also clinched a sliver in the rowing event by clocking 5:49.50. They were way behind the hosts China who finished at 5:37.44. At the same time they were way ahead of the bronze Medal winners Uzbekistan who ended the race in 5:55.96.
Sania Mirza, who was also a silver medalist at the 2006 Asian Games, the sealed a quarter-final berth in the women’s singles by defeating Chinese Shuai Zhang. She scored a 6-2, 6-2 win in the second round at the Aoti Tennis Centre.
Somdev Dewarman and Karan Rastogi also advanced to the pre-quarter finals of the men’s singles. Karan crushed Myaalikkuli Mamedkuliyev of Turkmenistan 6-0, 6-0 in a mere 45 minutes. Somdev then thrashed Jabor Mohammed Al Mutawa of Qatar with an identical scoreline in just 37 minutes. However, Rastogi was unlucky the second time when he entered the court with Vishnu Vardhan as they both withdrew from their match against Jun Young Kim and Min Jae Seol of South Korea.
