Zaheer had to be left out due to injury and on a flat pitch India had to bowl first after losing the toss to the Kiwis. But, the Indian bowlers bad run ended one day one terminated when they made the Kiwi batsmen stumble and fight hard for runs. Sreesanth early in the day in his first spell found swing and accuracy. He removed both the openers in his fifth over itself. Ishant too at the other end, after his first test since the heroics in Mohali, extracted some inswing and got priced wicket of Taylor. He also later removed the Kiwi Captain Veittori through an innocuous delivery taking his under edge.
Then, Ojha chipped in as well with the wickets of Williamson in the fifteen tenth and Hopkins in the twenty-eighth over. Ryder who pulled his calf muscle when sweeping Ojha and the previous match double centurion McCulum tried and fought their way back when the scorecard read NZ 82-6. But, eventually he was caught out superbly by Raina off the maverick Bhajji when he was on 59. It was a good innings though and much of it was in agony of pain! At the end of the day the Kiwis were 148 for the loss of seven wickets. And, McCullum stayed unbeaten on 34 of 80 balls, but, he too had strain in his back. So, the day was a good one for India with all bowlers getting breakthroughs and India strikingly prevailing.
And, so did Indian Hockey team at the Asian Games in Hockey. India powered their way to the men’s hockey semis beating Pakistan 3-2. The penalty corner specialist Sandeep Singh struck twice: first in the 3rd and third in the 48th minute. Dharamvir Singh also scored a goal in between as India had their third successive victory of Group B. India are leading the table with one match to go against Japan on Sunday. This victory was India’s fourth straight against Pakistan this year and third in twelve Asian games.
Unseeded Sania Mirza, too, created the first upset of the tournament by by defeating Tamarine Tanasugarn to enter the semis. She scored a 6-2 and 6-3 win over the Thailand player. Vijinder Singh the world’s number one also out-slugged Korean Deokjin Cho to enter the semis of the boxing competition. The Indian golf team also retained the men’s team silver.
So, it was a great day full of fun and frills for India. Hopefully, Indian bowlers will carry the same form and rhythm and we will the test match and series. And on the other hand, we also continue to do well in the Asian Games! Cheers to India, Indian Sportsperson and Indian Sports!
