November 27, 2010: Manchester United blasted away Blackburn Rovers at Old Trafford, smashing 7 goals against the visitor’s 1. United forward Dimitar Berbatov was the man of the moment as he scored 5 goals in the match. The visitors left shamefacedly as the home side’s superior display of football outclassed them from start to finish. Wayne Rooney was available for his first home match, after a long layoff due to injury.
With this win, Man United go top of the league above second placed Arsenal and third placed Chelsea, who have a game in hand. Berbatov has now become the league’s current top scorer with 11 goals to his name. He narrowly missed the opportunity to create history in the Premier League by being the first player ever to score 6 goals in a single match. However, he became the 4th player in the league to have scored 5 goals in a game.
Match Highlights
The match was one sided from the very start. Berbatov got on the score sheet in only the 2nd minute when he put Nani’s cross in the goal, with the Rovers goalkeeper Robinson caught ball watching. The visitors never really recovered, and they were again punished for their poor display in the 23rd minute when ParkJi Sung did a neat one-two with the returning Wayne Rooney and purposefully put the ball into the net. Berbatov added to the scoreline only 4 minutes later. He was gifted the goal as a stray back pass by defender Pascal Chimbonda landed in his feet and he assuredly converted it. The match was over even before 30 minutes had been played.
Nani showed us why he’s one of the best players in the world right now when he neatly skipped past defenders and laid the ball for Berbatov to slot home for his third goal of the match, immediately after the restart, putting the home side 4-0 up. At one point of time, Manchester United had 74% possession of the ball! Chimbonda was the one facing the wrath of the Red Devils as once again Nani danced past him to score the 5th goal of the match on the 48th minute mark. The fast paced display of immense talent left the Rovers defenders red-faced. The 62nd minute saw some more class from the Bulgarian striker as he scored his 4th goal of the match after the initial strike by Park was blocked and the ball fell into his path. He had more in the tank as he whipped up another goal, and his fifth of the match in the 70th minute with a solo close range effort.
Chris Samba got his team a consolation in the 83rd minute with a headed goal from a deep cross by young Josh Morris. But the humiliation was complete long before that. The match ended at 7-1.
