A dependable goalkeeper is a prerequisite for building a solid team. Quick reflexes and outstanding leadership skills define a good goalkeeper.
Here’s my list of the top goalkeepers in the English Premier League (EPL):
- Petr Cech: The 6 feet 4 inches Chelsea No.1 has an air of invincibility surrounding him. Excellent positioning and great reflexes have made him one of the best goalkeepers, not only in the Premier League, but also in the world. He ousted Carlo Cudicini from the Chelsea first team after his arrival from Rennes in 2004. The Czech international has 109 clean sheets to his name from 190 matches for Chelsea, which is a phenomenal record. He won the Barclays Golden Gloves award in the 2004-05 and the 2009-10 seasons.
- Edwin Van Der Sar: Though not as dependable as he was a few seasons before, Manchester United goalkeeper is still one of the best in the Premier League. His imposing presence in the box makes him hard to beat even in a one-on-one! Unmatchable reflexes have made him a favourite with the United supporters. He has rightfully earned his place after the likes of the great Peter Schmeichel in the Manchester United team.
- Jose Pepe Reina: After his move from Villareal to Liverpool in 2005, Pepe Reina consolidated his place as the Liverpool No. 1 after a series of brilliant performances. In his first season at Liverpool, he kept 11 consecutive clean sheets, and conceded the fewest goals in his first 50 matches. His communication with the back line, quick reflexes and great timing has made him an indispensable part of the team.
- Mark Schwarzer: The veteran Australian international has been vital for Fulham since his signing in 2008. The 38 year old goalkeeper built his career at Middlesbrough where he stayed for 11 years! He led to a phenomenal rise in Fulham’s repute when they finished at the 7th spot in the Premier League last season and also reached the finals of the UEFA Europa League. In his very first season at Fulham, he was awarded the Player of the Year award.
- Shay Given: Irish Shay Given, switched from Newcastle United where he played for almost 11 years to Manchester City in 2009. In and out of the first team at Newcastle United in his first few years, he finally consolidated his place in the 2000-2001season. He was a winner of the Intertoto club with Newcastle in the 2007-07 season. He has played more than 400 matches in the League, making him one of the most experienced goalkeepers.
