What Javed Miandad, former Pakistani cricketer had said about preparedness of China to make their mark in the game of cricket is coming true. China has made its presence felt in a big way, the only difference being that it is the ladies cricket team that is making waves, as they have demonstrated about it in the current Asian Games going on at Guangzhou, China.
Incidentally, it is a new township that China created from nowhere for the games, and when one compares the preparedness of a country for such mega events, India indeed pales into comparison as Guangzhou, has been billed by the planners and developers as the city to watch out for, much better than any other Chinese city. Have we been able to achieve anything like that in context of games?
Chinese eves players really announced their arrival in a big way in the Asian Games, when they made mince meat of the Malaysian team, and it is a turnaround that has happened in a jiffy, and there are no such precedents anywhere in the world where a country has demonstrated its determination to master a game, as alien as Cricket is for China. It also is worth writing about, as it is the Women’s team which is making the waves.
Besides, Chinese blew the trumpet of its arrival by choosing pace as the channel vehicle. Its pace bowlers scared the wits out of the Malaysian players and it bundled them for paltry 66 runs. Chinese determination to excel in the game of cricket is based on the Chinese philosophy “A soldier who does not want to be a good general, cannot be a good solider either”, i.e. they want to be the world champions. And with the likes of Javed Miandad, who is one of wiliest foxes in the game of cricket offering tips, the day is not far off when Chinese means’ team would also make their presence felt in a big way.
Nowhere else in the world any eve’s team has come up so fast in the game of cricket as it has happened in case of China. It would therefore be interesting to see how the competition pans out when the Chinese team goes out to play with the leaders of the pack i.e. the Aussies, Indians and the English. Women’s cricket would never be the same again, and eventually, Men’s cricket as well!
