Bayern Munich veteran all stars team demolished India’s most reputed and successful club East Bengal by a humiliating score of 10 goals to 3. The East Bengal fans were extremely disappointed by their team’s performance who were outclassed by the German opposition. Former Indian captain Debjit Ghosh said: “Never in my life have we been beaten so comprehensively. We have played against the best in Asia but conceded maybe 5 goals, but never 10.”
The one-sided football fixture in Yuba Bharati Krirangan was not a competitive match; it was organized to raise funds for several NGO’s and charity.
The match was almost ‘fixed’ as the organizers requested the Germans not to score more than 10 goals. Asked if they were asked not to do so, Paul Breitner – Bayern’s captain replied- “Yes, they did”. He further added, “Also, when we scored the ninth goal, we said it was enough. But there were so many chances that we couldn’t help but score another”. Breitner had previously said that his team wouldn’t concede an inch of the younger opposition.
The match was David versus Goliath as far as quality and experience was concerned. The German team had five world cup winners, two European and Bundesliga winners. A distraught Debjit Ghosh said, “We have to confess the sea of gap between them and us. They are academy bred athletes who still have the stamina to play 90- minutes even at this age”.
Most of the Munich clubs players now lead happy retired lives. Some of them are working in offices and some are commentators or analyzers in sport organizations. “Four- five years ago, we decided to play matches like this one. This is our sixth match of the year”, said Breitner. What were the results of the other matches they played? “We won 8-1 against a former international team from Luxembourg” said Breitner with a smile on his face.
On the other hand, India have been on the wrong end of humiliation. India were hammered by Kuwait 1-9 at home. Even the under-23 national team was outplayed by strong Japanese side in the on-going Asian games. If India intends to be recognized as a footballing nation in the future, such humiliating defeats must be dealt with immediate effect.
