In a complete turnaround of events at Old Trafford, Wayne Rooney signed a new five year contract with Manchester United which will keep the English striker at the Theatre of Dreams till the summer of 2015.
The rumour mills about Rooney and Ferguson having a spat and Rooney wanting to leave United was difficult to believe for any Red Devil supporter. But once Ferguson confirmed that Wayne had informed him that he wanted to leave and with Rooney adding fuel to the fire by questioning the club’s recruitment policy and saying that the club no longer matched his ambitions, the United supporters began to imagine life without Rooney.
All this set many tongues wagging as to where Rooney would move. John Terry called Rooney the best young player while Anelka said Rooney was welcome at Chelsea. Jose Mourinho at Real Madrid didn’t rule out a move to lure Rooney to Spain. Although Manchester City stayed out of this drama, there were widespread speculations that Rooney would move to United’s neighbouring rivals as they were one of the few clubs that could afford him.
Yet after a bunch of irate supporters protesting outside his house, a discussion with the club’s owners and manager, Rooney decided to sign a new deal at United.
In his words, “I am signing a new deal in the absolute belief that the management, coaching staff, board and owners are totally committed to making sure that United maintains its proud winning history – which is the reason I joined the club in the first place.” He called Sir Alex a genius and said that it was his belief and support that convinced him to stay. He also vowed to win over the fans again with his performances on the field.
Sir Alex, like every United supporter, was delighted and said that the door was always open for Rooney and assured that everyone involved with the club will get behind Wayne and show him the support that he needs to regain his lost form.
Rooney, meanwhile suffered an ankle injury in training ruling him out for 3 weeks which means that the Red Devil supporters will have to wait a while before they get to see Old Trafford’s favourite son return to action again.
