Hyderabadis should rejoice as their city has come into news within a fortnight for the achievements in sports as diverse as cricket and badminton, though the joy would have been complete had Sania Mirza also won her tournaments. Nevertheless, from Laxman to Saina Nehwal, the Hyderabadis have indeed made the country proud and after Haryana as a state that has recently hogged all the limelight in the Commonwealth Games, it is Hyderabad which is basking in the glory.
Traditionally these are the two sports i.e. cricket and badminton which had huge fan following and Hyderabad has ensured that at least for badminton the continuity would be there. For Saina the victory at the CWG is much more worthwhile as she had been critical of the arrangements at the games in the beginning. But by her performance she has proved that come what may she would not allow the procedural stumbling blocks to create hurdles in her performance.
Sania Mirza had begun her campaign in the CWG with lots of expectations and there was quite a lot of hope built around her of being able to win at least two medals one each in individual category as also in the mixed doubles, but in both the category Sania could not capitalize on the euphoria built around her name and succumbed to the pressure. One may always raise a question whether her marriage has been a factor affecting her performance! Well, may be yes, maybe not as arguments for both sides can be given. Sania as a matter of fact has been one story that has not lived up to its potential, maybe she has not been able to cope up with her injuries and as a result her career has not prospered in the manner in which it ought to have done.
Now coming to Laxman, he is one thorough gentleman who does not believe in basking in the limelight but does his job with clinical precision, and the results are there for all to see. No wonder, so much was ricky Ponting exorcised by the ghost of Laxman that he had announced before the beginning of the second test match that he would not allow a runner for Laxman.
For Saina, her career is now on a path that is paved with glory and rewards. She only need to concentrate on the game and not worry about associated paraphernalia as there are people to look after it.
