India steps up for a convincing start. The medal record sheet of the Indian Team players was grandly opened by the weightlifters. The success was not all enchanting as the sure winner Sonia Chanu of 48 kg weight lifting was pushed back to the second place by a 17 year old Nigerian school girl, Augustina Nwaololo who bagged the first gold medal of the games.
Sonia Chanu, 30 years old inspector was an anticipated winner of 48 kg lifting. But finally managed to be placed in the second place winning India’s first medal from the XIX Commonwealth Games. Sonia Chanu was inconsolable. Tearfully apologized for not living up to expectations. She slipped off two of her three attempts.
The bronze medal from women 48 kg weightlifting was again anchored by another Indian, Sandhya Rani Devi Atom.
Among the Men’s 56 kg it was Sukhen Dey who lifted 252 kg was triumphant in getting the silver. Then along the line came Srinivas Rao, an army man who conquered the bronze.
It was sure a great moment for India to have won 4 medals on the first day of the games. India in its motive of endearing 100 medals in XIX Commonwealth Games has unquestionably made a sporty start.
