The Indian Premier League’s governing council has been called for an emergency meeting by the BCCI on October 10th at Mumbai. No specified agenda has been put forth but according to the letter sent by the BCCI Secretary, N Srinivasan, the board sounds eager to react on the three show cause notices it had sent to the three IPL franchisees – Rajasthan Royals, Kings XI Punjab and Kochi. The BCCI’s annual general meeting last month had notified the above franchisees on account of irregularities conducted in the league and had given them ten days to respond.
After the annual general meeting, BCCI President, Shashank Manohar cracked the whip on the three franchisees and was especially hard on Kochi. Manohar had stated to the media that communicating with the newly formed franchisee was tough as it had split into two factions after the auction in March 2010.
Rendezvous Sports World, bagged the team for US $ 333 million, but almost immediately ran into trouble after the IPL committee found several undisclosed ‘secret’ partners in the consortium. A new agreement was signed but a new controversy cropped up when Lalit Modi, the then IPL chairman, made the ownership details public on Twitter.
Even six months after its formation, team Kochi’s problem is based on the distribution of shares amongst its members. No resolution has been reached even after talks amongst the promoters and investors, with the promoters not ready to give up the rights to lead the franchisee.
The meeting would be a first for the reconstituted governing council, with its membership reduced from 14 to 8, their tenure reduced and powers curbed. Chirayu Amin, is the new appointed chairman comprising five other members – Arun Jaitley, Ranjib Biswal, Anurag Thakur, Ajay Shirke and Rajiv Shukla. It also has former cricketers Ravi Shastri and Mohinder Amarnath, as honorary members.
