Kumara Sangakara to cover his flanks may pass the buck on Sehwag about blowing an issue out of proportion, one thing is for sure, and it could indeed have an effect on the fortunes of the Sri Lankan players. As a matter of fact they can now come under the scanner of the umpires and other authorities! It could really become a troublesome proposition for the Sri Lankan team players; after all, international media has had a mixed feeling about the manner in which Sri Lankan cricket has progressed.
One really does not understand what was the need for Kumar Sangakara to advice his bowler Ranadiv to do what he did! Sangakara was one of the most successful captains in the recently concluded IPL stepping aside from controversies and allowing the game of cricket to prosper. May be, the pressure of losing as a captain of the country could have been heavy on his mind, and it could have been the trigger for the eventuality. However, it has become major news all over the cricketing world and for the first time fast action has been taken by the authorities to be.
After all, cricket is a gentleman’s game, and this kind of unethical behavior is not called for. Indeed gone are the days from the ground when a feat of a player from the opposite team is lauded by the host team, there are more sniggers than appreciation. One does not know whether it is fallout of increased commercialisation of cricket, but indeed the game has changed where the space for appreciation of a performance on the ground does not find place as a priority item.
There are host of fans all around the world who sit glued to the television sets or log on to the cyber world to have a regular update on the game of cricket. They would feel disgusted at this turn of events and could unleash a big campaign in the cyber world that would be very difficult for the Sri Lankan team to contain. After all, India is a country that is electronically most empowered, the blogosphere dominated by the young generation that does not have a liking for cheating at all. If it unleashes its might, Sri Lanka would not be able to contain it, so it is better if the game is played in the spirit of the game.
