On a Saturday evening when Chelsea raced to their third successive win , Manchester United trounced West Ham and Arsenal struggled past Blackburn, a team by the name Tottenham suffered their first shock of the season losing to a dismally out of form Wigan Atheletic 0-1 .
Chelsea vs Stoke City saw Frank Lampard miss a penalty, but the Blues looked in complete control for most of the game. Stamford Bridge is never a easy away fixture and Stoke City were completely out of sorts for much of the period. Their best passage of play saw Sorensen save Lampard’s penalty. Malouda and Drogba got on to the score sheet as Chelsea produced a magnificent display, in a game which saw Ramires debut in front of the home fans. They have scored 14 goals in total in the premier league season and are yet to concede, a figure which will not go down well with their competitors.
Arsenal traveled to Ewood Park in search of 3 points. Theo Walcott, feeling bullish after his exploits last week, fired Arsenal into the lead in the 19th minute, only to be equalized mid way in to the first half by Mame Diouf. Blackburn worked hard throughout the game, but Arsenal’s class and persistence saw them take the lead early in the second half through Andrei Arshavin. Injury concerns have come back to haunt Arsenal as Robin Van Persie suffered a knock and is expected to be sidelined for a week.
Manchester United welcomed West Ham in a typically entertaining Old Trafford encounter. The first half hour was cagey with both teams waiting for an opening. Rooney scored his first goal after 18 parched hours from the spot, as Nani and Berbatov found their names on the score sheet. West Ham lacked steam and penetration to worry the united defence as Manchester United in a typical display of style, gathered three points at the back of a disappointing draw against Fulham. Nani atoned for his Fulham debacle with a stunning performance capped by a beautiful goal, and Berbatov acrobatically volleyed his second of the season.
Elsewhere, Tottenham suffered their first loss in the Premier league season as they quite literally failed to turn up. Wigan put their season’s dismal start behind them as they carved out a victory as Tottenham lacked conviction in every part of the pitch. The defense was shaky and the attack looked out of sorts, as Rodegella scored home an important victory for Wigan.
