The IPL Governing Council has scheduled a meeting today at Mumbai to discuss the agenda of the format of the cash rich league in its 2011 edition. The meeting’s main agenda will be to sort out the 2010 financials, and along with it will be discussing on cutting down the number of IPL matches to reduce player workload.
The IPL faced a lot of brickbats since its ousted chairman, Lalit Modi had decided on increasing the number of teams to ten. The increase in number of teams had further increased the number of matches to be played on home and away basis to 94 from the earlier scheduled 60. Situation worsened as after India’s dismal performance at the T20 World Cup, critics blamed the hectic IPL schedule for India’s dismal outing.
Former Indian skipper and a member of the BCCI Mansur Pataudi had said post T20 World Cup debacle that a review committee should be set up by the IPL Governing Council that shall look into reducing the number of matches from next season.
Earlier in June this year the three man committee set up by the BCCI had met to discuss any recommendations made to the IPL after discussing it with the team franchisees. This three man committee comprising Sunil Gavaskar, Ravi Shastri and Mansur Pataudi will be meeting today at Mumbai.
The finance and marketing committee will also be present at today’s meeting. The board has solicited bids for corporate sponsorship of all International cricket to be played by the Indian cricket team in the next three years. The board has received bids from ten companies, including Airtel, Idea Cellular and MicroMax.
