Ryan Neil ten Doeschate, was born in Port Elizabeth, Cape Province, South Africa; is a Dutch cricketer, represented the western province and currently plays for Essex before being snapped up by the Kolkata Knight Riders at $150,000. (Base Price – $50,000)
A cricketer for the Netherlands this lad boasts of the highest average in the limited over format (batsmen scoring more than 1000 ODI runs) 68.55. He has been an important feature of the Dutch side after Dan van Bunge. His impeccable credentials in the shortest format of the game have transformed him into a T20 freelancer! He has turned out in domestic twenty20 tournaments for Zimbabwe, New Zealand, Australia and now India apart from his long running contract with Essex. He was discovered by Essex on their pre-season tour of South Africa. A perfect utility apt for the latest version, his hard hitting batting is more than a gift and what makes him more welcome is his right arm medium fast bowling capable of shouldering the responsibilities of the new ball.
Ryan caught the eye during the ICC Intercontinental Championship held at Pretoria in the season of 2005-06. He had a dream run with a series of scores that read 84, 158, 138, 100 & finally 259* against Canada and to add to his honeymoon he returned with figures of 6-20 in the same match and no prizes for guessing, he bagged the man of the tournament as well. His next big break at the international arena came in 2007 when he was selected for to play for the Netherlands in the T20 World Cup and in a warm up game against India he captured 5 wickets including the likes of Sourav Ganguly, Mahendra Singh Dhoni, Yuvraj Singh & Virender Sehwag. In the opening match of the ICC World T20 he contributed to the shock defeat of the host nation, England by bowling the openers Ravi Bopara and Luke Wright and remained unbeaten at 22 while seeing his team through the finish line.
On October 6, 2010 he was named the Associate and Affiliate player of the year at the ICC Awards held at Bangalore. He completed a double as he achieved the same feat back in 2008. A batting average of 68.55 and a bowling average of 20.93 leave little to be imagined about his capabilities. A cricket fan looking for some quality talent and performance must watch out for this name. Only time is going to be a witness to whether he reverses the fate for the Knight Riders in the coming seasons of the IPL, if given a chance amidst the big names.
